ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHERS
PAT GRANEY is a Seattle-based choreographer who has received Choreography Fellowships from the NEA, Artist Trust, NEA International Program, and the Guggenheim Foundation. She has received the Alpert Award and a US Artists Award. Graney also received an ‘Arts Innovator’ Award from Artist Trust as well as a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award. In 2016, Ms. Graney’s work, Girl Gods, won 2 New York Dance/Performance Awards (Bessies). Ms. Graney began KTF/The Prison Project in 1992. KTF is one of the longest-running prison arts programs in the US. Her new work ATTIC is set to premiere at On the Boards in 2020.
DANI TIRRELL is a Black, Queer, Gender Non-Conforming movement-based artist. Dani uses his/her name as his/her pronouns. The focus of Dani’s work is centered on Black women/womxn/womyn that includes trans and GNC women/womxn/womyn. Dani focuses a lot on expressing Dani’s identity as a femme being living on this planet. Dani has background in modern dance but does not limit work to that medium. Dani also incorporates House, Vouge and Whacking. Dani creates work that is structured as well as improvised. Race is also at the center of Dani’s work. Dani often thinks about how Dani’s body is viewed in this country (United States) and how Dani’s body is viewed in Black non-queer and white spaces. Dani uses the concepts of what it means to be beautiful and ugly to create conversations about being in Dani’s body. Dani has choreographed works for Northwest Tap Connection (Seattle), Full Circle Dance Company (Detroit), Jazz and Spirit Dance Theater of Detroit (Detroit), Detroit Windsor Dance Academy (Detroit) and Vision Center Stage Dance Company (Detroit). Dani choreographed for the premier of House of Dinah written by Jerome A. Parker and Directed by Andrew Russell. House of Dinah premiered at On the Boards in the 2016/2017 season. Dani has also taught workshops centered on gender/sexuality/race at Texas Festival of Dance Improvisation (Texas Women’s University). Dani’s latest work Black Bois premiered at On the Boards (Seattle) in April 2018. Currently Dani’s work focuses on the queer, gender non-conforming and black experience. In March of 2018, Dani curated On the Boards Open Studio Showcase. Dani is the curator 2018/2019 season of Central District Forum of Arts and Ideas (Seattle). Dani will continue with the position of lecturer in the University of Washington Dance Department, teaching Street and Club Styles.
KATE WALLICH is a Seattle based choreographer, director and educator – named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch”. Kate has left a significant mark in the Northwest, having been commissioned and presented by leading institutions including On the Boards, Seattle Theater Group, Velocity Dance Center, Whim W’Him, and Northwest Dance Project among others; Nationally at The Joyce, Jacob’s Pillow Inside/Out, Newfields/IMA; Internationally at Springboard Danse and SPOTLIGHT: USA in Bulgaria. In 2016 Kate founded Studio Kate Wallich, a non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating a community of artists and the public through dance-based, design-forward experiences. The Studio supports The YC, Dance Church™, and YC2 — a platform for young dance professionals entering the working field.
ALETHEA ALEXANDER is a Seattle-based dance artist and educator. She holds an M.F.A. in Dance from the University of Washington where she is currently serving on faculty as Acting Assistant Professor. Her passion for teaching and building sensation-based dance spaces for diverse bodies to approach western concert dance forms has permeated her work with students at the University of Washington, Whatcom Community College, emerging and professional dancers, and Dance Church™and Pilates practitioners up and down the west coast. She has performed with the artists of Bellingham Repertory Dance (Bellingham); Chamber Dance Company, Quark Contemporary Dance Theatre, The Stone Dance Collective and Ballet Bellevue (Seattle); and Unum Dance Company, Scott Wells and Jo Kreiter (San Francisco). A native to Washington State, Alethea grew up in the little northwest corner city of Bellingham.
MARK HAIM is in his 4th decade of making dances. Born in New York City, Mark studied as a classical pianist at the Manhattan School of Music before beginning his formal dance studies with an honorary scholarship at The Juilliard School, where he received his BFA. He has created new works for many dance companies in the US, Europe and Asia, among them the Nederlands Dans Theater, Ballett Frankfurt, the Limon Dance Company, the Joffrey II Dancers, the Rotterdamse Dansgroep, the Silesian Dance Theater, the Companhia de Danca de Lisboa, CoDanceCo, the TRANS Dance Co., and Ballet Pacifica. He has restaged his works on companies such as The Joffrey Ballet, the Bat-Dor Dance Company of Israel, Djazzex, and the Juilliard Dance Ensemble. Since 2002, he has been guest choreographer at The Wooden Floor, an after-school organization that has promised hope and opportunity to nearly 400 low-income youth annually. He is a recipient of a 1987 NYFA Fellowship, 1988 and 1996 NEA Fellowships, and grants from the NPN Suitcase Fund, ArtsLink, Inc., the Harkness Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, and the Seattle Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture. In 2000, he was awarded the Scripps/ADF Humphrey-Weidman-Limon Fellowship for Choreography. His full evening solo project, The Goldberg Variations, has been performed at the John F. Kennedy Center, the American Dance Festival, the Danspace Project at St. Mark’s Church, On The Boards, and other venues in the U.S, Europe, and Asia. His This Land Is Your Land opened the 2013 ArtDanthe Festival in Paris, and has also been performed at the Joyce Theater, ADF, and by groups in San Diego and Beijing. Mark has been teaching dance since 1985, on the faculty of the American Dance Festival since 1993. From 2002-2008, he was Senior Artist in Residence at the University of Washington and in 2009 was Visiting Associate Professor of Dance at Reed College. He is currently on the faculty of the Velocity Dance Center, and the International Ballet Academy. He holds an MFA in Dance from the ADF/Hollins University MFA program and is a Fulbright Senior Specialist.
JARET HUGHES has 14 years of dance experience, with Hip Hop being his specialty along with training in Modern, Jazz, Ballet and African. Jaret has 11 years of choreographing and teaching experience with all ages, including 8 years at Elizabeth’s Dance Dimensions in Bellevue, Washington. Jaret’s choreography credits include the L.A. Clippers Spirit Dance Team (guest choreographer), Seattle Supersonics Dance Team for 5 years, founder of 2wisted Elegance from Seattle and LA’s debut of 2wisted Elegance with the help of his good friend Joey Cooper, Modazz Competition Teams at Elizabeth’s Dance Dimensions, co-choreographer and dancer for EVE in LA, and assistant choreographer / assistant Artistic Director for the “Invitation Feedback” video contest submission for Janet Jackson. Jaret Competed on Destination Stardom in Hawaii. Jaret’s performances include: Seattle’s Kube 93’s Summer Jam for 3 years with Twisted Elegance, which included sharing the main stage with artists such as Destiny’s Child, Ginuwine, Busta Rhymes, Blackstreet, Naughty By Nature and many more; various Hip Hop shows throughout Seattle including Daniel Cruz’s Battle of Seattle Remix 3 and 4 and, most recently while living in LA for 2 1/2 years, performances with Breed OCLA for numerous dance competitions and guest performances for the DVD Release Party for “Step Up 2: The Streets”. Jaret has shared his choreography expertise with various high school and college dance teams throughout Washington, California and Idaho.
MAYA SOTO is a choreographer, performer and award winning arts educator. Her work includes concert performance, movement installations, dance for theater and film. Maya brings together classical dance training and a sense of imaginative play. She has created 6 evening length works including Inner Galactic (2015) which was supported by creative residencies at 10 degrees in partnership with Velocity Dance Center (SEA), Exit Space (SEA) and Higher Ground (OR). Her choreography has been commissioned by numerous West Coast festivals and venues including On the Boards (SEA) and Conduit’s Dance+ Festival (PDX). As a performer, she has worked with many notable artists including Amy O’Neal, Sandstrommovement and KT Neihoff. Currently, she dances for Michele Miller/Catapult Dance. Maya is a passionate advocate for arts education. She teaches dance at Velocity Dance Center, the Northwest School, Seattle Theatre Group – Disney Musicals in Schools and the EMP Museum. For 10 years, she has worked extensively as a teaching artist in the public school system and developed several successful youth dance programs. In 2014, she received a Velocity Dance Champion Award for significant contribution to Seattle dance. Maya holds a BFA in dance from Cornish College of the Arts and a Washington State Professional Teaching Certificate.
