SUPPORT ARTISTS
Annually we employ 90+ artists and commission and present 85+ new works. In 2013 alone, we provided over $197,815 in direct and in-king support to dance artists, 13,000 hours of low-cost rehearsal space to the entire community, 1,040 hours of free space through 21 creative residencies, and sent Seattle artists on their first national tours.
We believe democracy in action means everyone with the desire to dance should have the opportunity. In 2013 we awarded 46 need-based scholarships to dedicated students. Our Access Velocity program supported 34 independently produced performances by Seattle artists in our intimate Founders Theater.
INCUBATE NEW PERFORMANCE
Since 1996 Velocity has commissioned 151+ new works and presented 175+ premieres by some of Seattle’s strongest artists and world-class innovators in stage works, film, installation and hybrid forms.
PROVIDE TRAINING
With a daily professional class open to the community; over 38 weekly movement classes ranging from modern to ballet to Indian Odissi; and world-class summer dance intensives Strictly Seattle and the Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation, Velocity is the essential catalyst for contemporary dance and movement-based practices in the Pacific Northwest.
FOSTER RESEARCH
Velocity is the place where artists take risks. Through our Artist-in-Residence and Creative Resident program, Made in Seattle, Investigative Movement Practices classes, Master Class Series and more, we foster an environment where diverse dance practices flourish.
INCREASE OUTREACH + COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION
Our free humanities programming and online journal STANCE engage minds and build meaningful links between artists and the community. We invite one and all into open, thoughtful conversations on issues in contemporary art and society. Velocity welcomes community members new to dance every day.
