TECHNICAL INTERNSHIP

Background: Velocity is Seattle’s premier art center dedicated to contemporary dance and performance. Velocity advances contemporary dance and movement-based art by fostering the creative explorations of artists and audiences through an invested commitment to education, creation, performance, inquiry, community participation, and inter/national exchange.

Reports to: Technical Director/Operations Manager

Position description: The Tech Intern will assist staff with technical aspects of productions, learn basics of lights and sound, be on crew during Velocity produced shows.

Hours: Flexible schedule, but must meet established guidelines. Internship hours will be completed primarily on weekends during show + production times. Applicant must have a flexible schedule for Thursday-Sunday evenings.

Compensation: Position is unpaid. Intern will receive unlimited dance classes at the rate of $5/class and studio rental at the rate of $7/hr.

Term of Position

This is appointment starts October 13, 2014. (These dates are semi-negotiable). It can be renewed based on mutual agreement. The Intern is responsible for tracking their hours and e-mailing a monthly total to Helen at info@velocitydancecenter.org. The Intern may resign from post with 15 days notice. Position open until filled.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work with Velocity staff to keep facilities organized and maintained
  • Work with Technical Director to ensure tech booth organization is maximized
  • Attend production meetings regarding Velocity produced shows
  • Assist on Velocity produced shows as Stage Hand
  • Assist with other Velocity events and shows as needed

Reporting

  • Prepare informal weekly reports and maintain regular contact with Technical Director.

COMMUNICATIONS INTERNship

Reports to: Communications Manager

Position description: The Communications Intern will assist the Communications Manager and Communications Associate with the visibility and publication of exciting and innovative dance-related programs, events and classes.

Hours: 10-15 hours per week. Flexible schedule, but must meet established guidelines.

Compensation: Position is unpaid, but will be entitled to unlimited classes at the rate of $5/class and discounted rehearsal space at Velocity.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize social media to create buzz about Velocity performances, events and classes
  • Communicate directly with local and national press and organizations through their social media platforms
  • Coordinate social media strategies with Velocity’s communications goals
  • Utilize tone of clarity and energy that connects to Velocity’s mission + vision
  • Assist with content and community engagement for Velocity’s online journal of choreographic culture, STANCE
  • Gather information and design small in-house collateral
  • Make in-house flyers for one-time events
  • Aid in distributing promotional materials
  • Archive press articles, hard copy and online
  • Add performances and events to online press calendars
  • Create, distribute and collect surveys and testimonials
  • Work with Velocity staff to help plan and implement exciting community engagement activities
  • Work with staff to promote upcoming events

Qualifications

  • Enthusiasm for utilizing social and new media
  • Strong organizational, writing, verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to multitask and stay focused
  • Comfortable working independently
  • Knowledge of the dance community
  • Eye for virtuosic and energetic photographs
  • Proficiency with WordPress, Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Beneficial: Basic skills in Photoshop and InDesign

DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP

Reports to: Director of Philanthropy

Position description: The Development Intern works directly with the Director of Philanthropy to help ensure smooth day-to-day organizational fundraising operations.

Hours: 10-15 hours per week. Flexible schedule, but must meet established guidelines.

Compensation: Position is unpaid, but will be entitled to unlimited classes at the rate of $5/class and discounted rehearsal space at Velocity.

  • Academic Credit: Contact your university for this information.  Velocity will fill out any necessary forms for the completion of credit.
  • Great resume builder.
  • Inside look at and active involvement in running an arts non-profit organization.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring donors are acknowledged in timely manner.
  • Donor/funder data maintained in database (PatronManager/SalesForce).
  • Assist in maintaining grants schedule and preparing submissions.
  • Assist with event procurement and tracking event timelines.

Qualifications

  • Ability to multitask.
  • Strong organizational, writing, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable working independently.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Knowledge of the dance community is a plus.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain donor/funder discretion.
  • Interest in gaining experience in fundraising activities.
  • Dependability.
