Dayna Hanson is a Seattle-based choreographer, dance theater director and filmmaker. Co-founder of dance theater company 33 Fainting Spells, Dayna’s work has been presented nationally and internationally since the early 1990s, including at venues such as REDCAT, Joyce Theater, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Walker Art Center, Miami Light Project, Kunstlerhaus Mousonturm, New York Live Arts, Dance Umbrella Austin and many others. Her dance films have screened at more than 50 festivals worldwide, including New York Film Festival and Edinburgh International Film Festival. She co-curated 33 Fainting Spells’ international dance film festival, New Dance Cinema, from 1999 – 2003.
Called “a delicious dance theatre exploration of the ironies of the American Revolution” by American Theatre magazine, Dayna’s 2010 dance theater production, Gloria’s Cause, was commissioned by On the Boards and toured North America in 2011-’12. Based loosely on Gloria’s Cause, Dayna’s first feature film, a hybrid narrative dance film called Improvement Club, premiered in 2013 at South by Southwest. In 2010-11 she collaborated with Austin-based devised theater company Rude Mechs, creating choreography for I’ve Never Been So Happy. Her choreography can also be seen in Korean director Tae Yong Kim’s 2011 feature film, Late Autumn.

Her work has received support from National Dance Project, MAP Fund, 4Culture, Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs and others. New this year, our annual celebration of dance on screen is extended to TWO nights featuring the best in local, national and international dance films, plus, the winners from On the Boards’ 15-Second Dance Film Contest. (Submit yours here!)
Next Dance Cinema is followed by a weeklong run of Velocity 2013 A.I.R. Dayna Hanson’s full-length feature film Improvement Club at Northwest Film Forum Dec 13-19.

Seattle-based and internationally recognized dancemaker/filmmaker Dayna Hanson will share the inspiration and process of her latest work The Clay Duke about gun violence and mental health issues. After her presentation, artists of different disciplines will present one work of any medium at any stage of completion. Attendees not showing work are welcome to actively engage in discussion and share feedback. Dayna will facilitate an open and safe dialogue.

Dayna’s new dance theater work, The Clay Duke, is inspired by a Florida school board shooting; produced by ArKtype and On the Boards, The Clay Duke is being developed in a series of creative residencies, including at ACT Theatre, Maggie Allesee National Choreographic Center in Tallahassee, FL and Velocity during Dayna’s tenure as 2013 Artist-in-Residence. The Clay Duke will premiere December 5 – 8, 2013 at On the Boards.
The Clay Duke is commissioned and supported through On the Boards’ Performance Production Program, produced by ArKtype and created with support from 4Culture, ACT Theatre, Artist Trust, MANCC (Maggie Allessee National Choreographic Center), The MAP Fund, a program of Creative Capital supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Noorderzon Festival; Noorderzon Festival / Grand Theater, Groningen; On the Boards, The Office of Arts & Culture, Velocity Dance Center and West of Lenin.
